 Life Issues: Updates and Advocacy

This November, t he U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in two cases challenging the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, which lower courts have prevented from taking effect:

  • Gonzalez v. Carhart
  • Gonzalez v. Planned Parenthood

These are the most significant abortion cases the Court will have heard since 2000, when it invalidated state bans on PBA in Stenberg v. Carhart. Click here for more information.

The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act (H.R. 6099) would require abortion providers to inform women seeking abortions 20 weeks after fertilization that medical evidence suggests her unborn child will feel pain during the procedure.

This critical bill, sponsored by Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ), would also ensure the woman will have the option of choosing anesthesia for her child, so that the unborn child’s pain is less severe.
