Selecting the Prayer

Three prayers have been prepared for each of the seven assumptions. First decide which assumption will be the focus of the prayer, then decide which of the three prayers to use. The book is formatted for easy copying.

FORMAT OF THE PRAYER:

Prior to the beginning of the prayer, the facilitator:

Asks someone to be prepared to read the Scripture Reading.

If the group is going to use music the facilitator needs to choose the hymn, obtain hymnals/missalettes and recruit someone to lead in the singing.

Should a group prefer, a tape or cassette could be played in place of accapella singing.

CALL TO PRAYER:

The facilitator selects the opening prayer. The whole group prays either:

Prayer in Time of Change or the Prayer of Vatican II together.

SCRIPTURE READING: Selected person reads the Scripture

LIFE FOCUS QUESTIONS:

The dialogue around these questions is intended to be faith sharing (how the Scripture is mirrored in personal life experiences) NOT a Scripture study nor debate. The facilitator invites members of the group to respond to any question that appeals to them. It is not necessary to take them in order, nor to “cover” every question. The questions may serve as a conversation starter and take the group to topics not mentioned in the questions. If the group is large, participation may be enhanced by dividing up into a number of smaller groups. There may be some quiet time between people speaking.

RE-READ THE SCRIPTURE: Read by the same person

SUGGESTED SONG:

Invite group to join in singing the selected song, or use a tape/disk.

SUGGESTED SCRIPTURE ACTION: If the suggestion(s) listed are helpful to the group, use it. Or the printed ideas, may “prime the pump” for the group’s discussion of possible actions. Something “OTHER” might well be the most appropriate.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Ends the prayer. Can be read by the whole group, the leader or another member.
