If opportunities to do God’s work were confined only to those ordained or vowed to a religious community, the laity would quickly become an uninvolved class of spectators. According to the documents of the second Vatican Council, all the baptized are called to do God’s work in service to each other. Opportunities for professional and volunteer lay ministry abound in today’s church.
