Position: Part-time Faith Formation Coordinator

Location: St. Mary’s of the Lake, Watkins Glen, St. Benedict’s, Odessa, Watkins Glen, NY 14891

 

Position Purpose:

The Faith Formation Coordinator collaborates with the Pastor/Parochial Administrator and the staff in providing services to the parishes in overseeing the faith formation and sacramental programs for children/youth and RCIA.  The Faith Formation Coordinator is expected to be visible at Sunday Masses on a rotating basis.

Status:  Part-time Non-exempt

 Normal Work Hours:  This position is an hourly position under present federal and state guidelines for 15-20 hours per week.  Any additional hours require approval of the Pastor/Parochial Administrator.  Work hours vary from week to week.  This position requires Sunday work.

The Faith Formation Coordinator is responsible for notifying the pastor/administrator of changes in work hours prior to the start of a pay period.
Significant changes in office hours must be shared by the Faith Formation Coordinator with the secretary.

Anytime an hourly employee works beyond six consecutive hours, they are required by New York State Labor Law and diocesan policy to take ½ hour meal break and document this on their time sheet.

 Reports to: Pastor/Parochial Administrator

Duties and Responsibilities:  Aided by the Faith Formation Assistant, who assists the Faith Formation Coordinator one day a week, the Faith Formation Coordinator performs the following duties:

 General Duties:

    • Performs/Supervises the following ministries and programs.
      • Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
      • Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
      • Family of Faith (grades 1-7)
      • Youth Group
      • This is accomplished by meeting with teams, volunteers, and/or staff on a regular basis, setting goals and objectives. establishing and implementing criteria for evaluation and assessment for growth and success.
    • Participates in the meetings of the
      • Pastoral Council
      • Staff
  • Works with the Operations Manager in developing and following the budget for these ministries
  • Continues to develop professionally by reading and reflection, participation in continuing education and other events, including diocesan workshops and conferences, as approved and as appropriate.

 Faith Formation Responsibilities:

  • Assure the coordination, development and implementation of catechetical programming and youth activities for students in grades K-12 that foster spiritual formation. The programming should include but not be limited to faith formation for preK-7, and youth group activities for grades 8-12. This includes fostering youth participation in diocesan retreats (if any)
  • Coordinates and implements sacramental preparation sessions for First Eucharist, First Reconciliation and Confirmation.
  • Assure the development and maintenance of accurate and confidential record-keeping systems for faith formation and sacraments.
  • Encourages children who have made their First Eucharist to serve as Altar Servers and empower youth to assume appropriate roles of service and leadership within the parishes including as Lectors, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communions (in accord with diocesan guidelines), catechists, etc.
  • Educate and engage the parishes in being part of and active in our faith formation and youth ministry programs.
  • Assists the CASE coordinator in making sure that all volunteers working with the Faith Formation Coordinator are CASE trained if needed.

Position Requirements:

  • An active member of the Roman Catholic Church
  • Certified or currently enrolled in a children’s faith formation teaching program recognized by the diocese.
  • Some youth and faith formation experience desirable
  • A demonstrated ability to share one’s own journey of faith; possess the skills to relate and provide a response with compassion and responsibility.
  • Possesses good listening skills, ability to act appropriately to conflict and respond appropriately to questions or challenges.
  • Have an in-depth grasp of Church teaching, current pastoral theology and the liturgical norms of the Church, including those of the Diocese of Rochester.
  • Understands the principles of pastoral counseling, including referrals, confidentiality, boundaries and is informed/knowledgeable about the diocesan administrative guidelines and policies.
  • Proficient in computer software including Microsoft Office and database programs.
  • Able to provide own transportation
  • Ability to complete necessary paperwork
  • Ability to read and apply regulations and policies
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and plan, and have good communication skills and be a team player.
