LITURGICAL MUSICIAN (PART-TIME)

POSITION PURPOSE: To provide music which is liturgically appropriate for parish liturgies and other designated celebrations.

The Liturgical Musician is responsible for playing (organ and piano) and leading the assembly at weekend liturgies and other services (e.g., weddings, funerals). Requires basic musical ability and knowledge of Roman Catholic Liturgy.

The liturgical musician collaborates with the Contemporary Music Ensemble and participates in the ensemble rehearsals on Thursday evenings at 7 pm and prior to the 5 pm liturgies on Saturdays. The
ensemble performs Masses during September – June season with summers off.

LIST OF POSSIBLE JOB DUTIES SPECIFIC TO LITURGICAL MUSICIANS:

  1. May collaborate with the pastor/pastoral administrator/priest sacramental minister and other staff in implementing the mission of the parish. This is accomplished by participating in the planning, implementing, and evaluation of the parish’s programs, goals, and objectives, with specific focus on music (in accordance with liturgical documents and norms).
  2. May serve as professional resource to staff members, parishioners, and choir members in the area of music.
  3. Assures that music is provided for parish liturgies. This is accomplished by selecting music, leading parishioners and choir members in music selections and by performing liturgical music.
  4. Facilitates the participation of parish community in singing at liturgical celebrations.
  5. Selects and develops participation aids for the congregation, and provides opportunities for congregation to participate through singing.
  6. Provides assistance for parishioners needing music for weddings and funerals. If these services are performed outside of normal job responsibilies, they should be compensated separately.
  7. Maintains a level of knowledge and skills required for the ministry. This is accomplished by reading, and attendance at workshops and conventions. This is also accomplished through regular
    preparation/practice of any specific music the Director of Music provides (i.e. organ practices, singing, choral conducting, etc.). Also participates in regional, Diocesan and National Professional organizations,
    as approved and appropriate.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS- LITURGICAL MUSICIAN:

  • Active member of a Roman Catholic parish faith community or must be willing to function in a manner consistent with the mission of the Catholic Church.
  • Ability to play music on a level comparable to a common Christmas Carol at tempo.
  • Understanding of basic music theory such as key signatures, meter and standard notation.
  • Keyboard (organ and piano) ability.
  • Some vocal experience including ability to sing with accurate pitch and rhythm demonstrating knowledge of vocal production.
  • Demonstrated willingness to work with people.
  • Knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy including Liturgy documents, music resources including current hymnals, etc. and familiarity with Lectionary and Sacramentary

Example of Proficient Wage Structure:

  • $100 for regular weekend liturgies
  • $100 for funerals
  • $150 for weddings
  • $50 for rehearsals
