Catholic Schools Office Statement

on Holy Family Middle School, Elmira

Nov. 30, 2011

“Beginning in September 2012, Holy Family Middle School in Elmira will be closed. All pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade students will be housed in the current Holy Family Elementary School facilities. Those students entering the 7th and 8th grade will be invited to register for a new Regional Catholic Junior High Program to be based at Notre Dame High School. This decision was not made lightly and comes after careful consideration and much prayer.

While we are truly saddened by this decision, we are excited about the prospects for Catholic education in the Southern Tier going forward. The decision by Notre Dame High School to add a Regional Junior High means that we can continue the tradition of offering quality, faith-based education in grades Pre-K through 12 in Elmira and the surrounding communities.

We want to take this opportunity to offer sincere thanks to the faculty, staff, and parents for keeping the spirit of Catholic education alive at Holy Family Middle School for decades. We are confident that Notre Dame will welcome our students with open arms.

We believe strongly in the virtues of a Catholic education and will continue to do all we can to support the remaining schools across the Diocese of Rochester.”
