May 3, 2010 Recognitio to the English translation of the Roman Missal

Last Friday the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted its recognitio to the English translation of the third edition of the Roman Missal.

While this development marks a major step forward, when the new Missal will be made available for parish use remains unclear. Cardinal George Pell, chairman of the Vox Clara Committee, the international group of bishops advising the Vatican about the translation, stated that although formal approval was given, the new Missal certainly will not be available before 2011. Advent next year is considered to be the most likely time, once various technical adjustments and printing are completed.

Rev. Rick Hilgartner, associate director Secretariat of Divine Worship to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, stated that it appears that implementation will likely be November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent.

The Holy Father has stressed throughout the process that the changes to the Missal be “introduced with sensitivity.”

The Office of Liturgy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester is working with various offices and committees to strategize the transition of the new translation for Diocesan and Parish celebrations. A concrete implementation plan will be announced soon.

NEW MUSIC FOR THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL

ICEL (the International Commission on English in the Liturgy) has posted on its website a document that provides an extensive sampling of the music being prepared for inclusion in the new English language edition of the Roman Missal. The document also offers explanations of the various decisions that have been made about the musical settings. Watch your mailbox – this same article will appear in the June issue of Pastoral Music.

The Bishops’ Committee on Divine Worship is reminding pastoral musicians and other leaders that the new texts and the proposed music are being provided for information and study only – they may not be used in the liturgy.
